Overview
This two-book collection brings together Amy Liptrot's acclaimed memoirs of self-discovery, addiction, and connection across two very different landscapes. The Outrun follows her return to the windswept Orkney islands to recover from alcoholism, while The Instant traces her impulsive move to Berlin in search of new love and adventure. Together, these books chart a raw, honest arc from rock bottom to renewal, blending sharp memoir with lyrical nature and city writing. Fans of memoir, recovery narratives, and travel writing will find intimacy and landscape in this pairing of Liptrot's most personal work.
About the Books
Amy Liptrot's two memoirs stand among the most vivid nature and recovery writing of the past decade. The Outrun opens as Liptrot, aged thirty, returns to her childhood home on Orkney after a decade of addiction in London. On the remote island, she rebuilds her life morning by morning: swimming in cold seas, tracking wildlife, and searching the sky for the Northern Lights. The memoir won the Wainwright Prize and the PEN Ackerley Prize, and was shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize and the Ondaatje Prize.
The Instant picks up the story years later, when Liptrot, restless after her island recovery, books a one-way flight to Berlin in search of new experience, work, and love. She explores the city's nightclubs and parks, hunts for its resident goshawks and raccoons, and looks for connection online. Where The Outrun is rooted in wind and rock, The Instant moves at city speed, capturing a year of longing and reinvention. Read together, the two books portray a writer moving between isolation and crowd, sea and street, past and present, always in Liptrot's precise, unsentimental voice.
