Overview
Bob Books Set 4: Complex Words brings together eight short paperback readers that move young learners past simple three-letter words into blends, sight words, and longer compound words. Written by reading teacher Bobby Lynn Maslen and illustrated by John R. Maslen, this Stage 3 collection is designed for children ages 4 to 6 (Kindergarten through first grade) who have mastered basic phonics and are ready for a bit more challenge. Each tiny book keeps sentences short and sounds repetitive, so kids can decode independently while still feeling the thrill of finishing a whole story on their own.
About the Books
Bob Books have helped generations of kids crack the reading code by pairing tightly controlled phonics text with warm, funny line drawings, and Set 4: Complex Words is where the training wheels start to come off. After three sets built almost entirely on short vowels, this fourth box introduces new consonant blends, more sight words, and longer compound words, while still leaning on sound repetition that makes early decoding manageable. The eight stories in this set follow a cast of everyday kids, pets, and silly situations, from a swim at the pool to a wish gone sideways, giving children relatable, giggle-worthy reasons to keep turning pages. Sentences stretch a little longer than in earlier Bob Books sets, but the format stays the same: tiny, pocket-sized paperbacks with a few sentences per page, oversized text, and pictures that mirror the words exactly, so a struggling reader always has a visual anchor. Teachers describe this Stage 3: Developing Reader stage as the bridge between simple decodable readers and real early chapter books, and that is exactly the job this set does. Kids who complete Set 4 are typically decoding compound words like sunset and cannot, recognizing common word endings, and reading with a noticeably smoother rhythm than when they started. Because each book can be finished in a single sitting, the set works well for daily practice, classroom small-group work, or a five-minute bedtime routine, and the compact trim size makes the box easy to pack for reading on the go.

About the Author
Bobby Lynn Maslen created the original Bob Books in the early 1970s while working as a reading teacher, hand-stapling tiny books together to help her struggling students experience the thrill of reading a whole story on their own. That simple classroom tool grew into one of the best-known early reading series in the United States, now published by Scholastic and used by parents, teachers, and tutors nationwide. Maslen's husband, John R. Maslen, illustrated the series, and her daughter, Lynn Maslen Kertell, later joined as a co-author on additional sets. Bobby is now retired and lives in Portland, Oregon.
