Overview
This Breadwinner series collection brings together all five novels by Deborah Ellis in one paperback set, following Parvana and her friends through decades of war, displacement, and renewal in Afghanistan. Beginning with Parvana disguising herself as a boy to feed her family under Taliban rule, the story arc travels through refugee camps, reunions, and the return of the Taliban years later. Ellis's spare, honest prose makes hard history accessible to young readers, pairing gripping survival stories with genuine empathy. It's a set built for middle grade and teen readers, book clubs, and classrooms exploring conflict and resilience.

About the Books
The Breadwinner introduces eleven-year-old Parvana, who cuts her hair and dons boys' clothing to support her family after her father is arrested by the Taliban. From there, the series widens its lens outward. Parvana's Journey sends her alone across a war-torn landscape, gathering a band of orphaned children as she searches for her family across a country scarred by landmines and checkpoints. Mud City shifts focus to her friend Shauzia, stranded in a crowded Pakistani refugee camp and still dreaming of reaching the sea and building a new life in France. My Name Is Parvana catches up with an older Parvana, caught in the crossfire of suspicion and interrogation as she tries to keep a makeshift school for girls running amid renewed danger. One More Mountain, the newest addition, returns to Kabul as American forces withdraw and the Taliban retake control, forcing Parvana's family to confront familiar fears in an unfamiliar new reality. Together, the five novels chronicle one girl's growth inside a country in constant upheaval, moving between home, road, camp, and classroom. Ellis researched the books by interviewing women and girls in Afghan refugee camps, and that groundwork shows in the texture of daily life she renders throughout: bartering for bread, hiding identity documents, and teaching lessons in secret.
