Overview
This seven-book collection gathers the complete Hal Challis Investigation series by acclaimed Australian crime writer Garry Disher, following Detective Inspector Hal Challis and Sergeant Ellen Destry as they police the fictional coastal town of Waterloo on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. From missing children and drug rings to arson and armed robbery, each novel layers a tightly plotted case over the daily grind, rivalries, and small victories of a stretched regional police unit. Written in spare, atmospheric prose, the series has drawn comparisons to the best of British and Scandinavian procedurals while staying distinctly, dustily Australian.

About the Books
Garry Disher's Hal Challis Investigation series (also published as the Peninsula Crimes novels) began in 2004 with The Dragon Man, introducing Detective Inspector Hal Challis and his ambitious offsider Sergeant Ellen Destry, based at the fictional station of Waterloo on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Set around the real-life geography of the Peninsula, the books trade the glamour of the city for a rougher, seasonal world of holiday shacks, drought-stricken farms, and bored teenagers, where petty theft can tip into something far darker. Kittyhawk Down and Snapshot deepen the ensemble cast of local officers, each carrying their own quiet troubles, while Chain of Evidence turns the investigation inward with a missing child case that hits close to home for Destry. Blood Moon and Whispering Death push further into organized crime and the corrosive effect of long-term casework, and the series closes with Signal Loss, published by Text Publishing in 2016, in which a bushfire and a meth lab collide with a decades-old grudge. Across all seven books, Disher is less interested in shootouts than in procedure: paperwork, budget cuts, jurisdictional friction, and the slow accumulation of evidence that eventually cracks a case. The series is widely regarded as one of the most realistic and respected police procedural runs in contemporary Australian crime fiction, and it has helped establish Disher's reputation among readers of character-driven procedural mysteries.
