Overview
Meet Hank Zipzer, the lovable "world's greatest underachiever" created by actor and author Henry Winkler with co-writer Lin Oliver. This ten-book paperback set follows Hank through school science fairs, field trips, summer school, and Halloween haunted houses as he turns everyday classroom chaos into laugh-out-loud adventure. Written with dyslexia in mind, the series pairs short chapters and a breezy narrative voice with a big-hearted message: smart comes in many forms. A favorite for reluctant readers, classroom libraries, and family bookshelves, this collection is an easy way to build reading confidence one funny mishap at a time.
About the Books
Hank Zipzer is clever, funny, and endlessly inventive—he just has a knack for turning simple assignments into full-blown disasters. Across these ten stories, Hank tackles a science project gone wrong, a report card full of Ds, a disastrous overnight field trip aboard a tall ship, a Multi-Cultural Day cooking catastrophe, a sports unit he's sure to fail, a haunted house scheme against the school bully, and much more. Henry Winkler drew on his own experience growing up with undiagnosed dyslexia to shape Hank's voice, and it shows: the humor never punches down, and every setback becomes a chance for Hank to problem-solve his way to a win, usually with help from loyal friends and a patient family. Lin Oliver's plotting keeps each book moving at a brisk, chapter-a-day pace that's ideal for both independent readers and shared read-aloud time. The tone is warm rather than preachy, treating Hank's learning differences as simply part of who he is rather than an obstacle to be fixed. Kids who see themselves in Hank's struggles with spelling, grades, or sitting still will find a hero who never stops trying, and kids who don't will still laugh along at the chaos. Together, the ten books form a satisfying, low-pressure entry point into chapter-book fiction, perfect for building stamina before longer middle-grade novels.
