About the Books
James Clavell's Asian Saga is a landmark of historical fiction, built from six standalone novels connected by recurring families, trading houses, and the long arc of East-meets-West history. Shogun opens the saga with an English pilot shipwrecked in feudal Japan, navigating shoguns, samurai, and shifting loyalties. Tai-Pan follows a Scottish trader carving out a commercial empire in early Hong Kong, while Gai-Jin continues the Struan family story amid political upheaval in 19th-century Japan. King Rat draws on Clavell's own wartime experience as a prisoner of war, offering a gritty survival story. Noble House jumps forward to 1960s Hong Kong for a fast-paced tale of corporate rivalry and espionage, and Whirlwind closes the saga with the Iranian Revolution and a desperate rescue. Rounding out the set is The Art of War by Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese military treatise that has shaped strategic thinking for centuries, presented here with a foreword written by Clavell. Read together or individually, these seven books reward readers with intricate plotting, deeply researched settings, and unforgettable characters whose fates ripple across generations.
