Overview
This three-book paperback collection brings together celebrated journalist John Kampfner's sharpest non-fiction work on modern Europe and the wider world. Across In Search of Berlin, Braver New World, and Why the Germans Do It Better, Kampfner draws on decades of first-hand reporting to explore how nations rebuild, reinvent, and sometimes outshine their rivals. Ideal for readers of history, politics, and current affairs, this set pairs sharp analysis with vivid storytelling, making it a thoughtful gift for anyone curious about Germany, Europe, and the future of democracy.
About the Books
In Search of Berlin tells the 800-year story of a city that survived empires, war, division, and reunification, drawing on Kampfner's memories as a young journalist in Communist East Berlin during the fall of the Wall. He walks the capital's streets and monuments to show how a place "tortured by its past" keeps reinventing itself. Braver New World turns outward, with Kampfner traveling to ten countries confronting shared modern challenges, from climate change to inequality, with unusual courage and creativity. At a time when many democracies feel paralyzed by fear, he profiles nations finding practical, hopeful solutions. Why the Germans Do It Better closes the set by asking how a country that was a patchwork of disparate states only 150 years ago became one of the world's most stable, prosperous democracies. Kampfner examines its history, consensus politics, and civic life, arguing that its quiet pragmatism holds lessons for Britain and America. Together, the three titles form a compelling arc: a personal history of one city, a global survey of bold nations, and a close study of Europe's most influential economy, ideal for book clubs and curious travelers alike.
