Overview
This two-book paperback collection brings together two essential works by Leonard Cohen, the revered Canadian poet, novelist, and singer-songwriter. The Flame, Cohen's final work assembled in the last months of his life, gathers poems, notebook fragments, lyrics, and hand-drawn self-portraits into a haunting statement. Book of Longing, written over two decades between Montreal, Mumbai, and Mount Baldy, pairs Cohen's poetry with his own playful, provocative drawings. Together these volumes trace a singular artist's evolution, offering readers an intimate window into one of the twentieth century's most influential literary voices.
About the Books
Leonard Cohen spent a lifetime moving between music, poetry, and visual art, and this collection captures both ends of that arc. The Flame gathers Cohen's last poems and writings, selected and ordered by Cohen himself in the final months of his life, drawing on his private notebooks alongside lyrics, prose pieces, and illustrations. Published in 2019, it became a New York Times bestseller and won the Books Are My Bag Readers Award for Poetry, a fitting final chapter to his career. Book of Longing, by contrast, captures Cohen at the height of his creative restlessness: his first new poetry collection in twenty years after 1984's Book of Mercy, written across Montreal, Mumbai, and during his retreat at a Zen monastery on Mount Baldy. The poems are accompanied throughout by Cohen's own witty, sensuous illustrations and self-portraits. Read side by side, the two books frame Cohen's career from mid-life reinvention to his final reckoning with mortality, love, faith, and art. Fans of his music will recognize the same searching, wry, deeply human voice that filled his songs, now given room to roam across notebooks and unguarded verse. This set lets readers experience Cohen the writer and visual artist in full, rewarding both first-time readers and devoted longtime fans.
