Overview
This five-book paperback collection brings together two of Octavia E. Butler's most celebrated works of speculative fiction: the Lilith's Brood trilogy (Dawn, Adulthood Rites, Imago) and the Parable duology (Parable of the Sower, Parable of the Talents). Spanning genetic transformation after an alien rescue and a devastating near-future collapse of American society, these five novels showcase Butler's visionary blend of biology, politics, and human survival. A brand-new paperback set for science fiction readers, collectors, book clubs, and anyone discovering a true genre pioneer for the very first time this year.
About the Books
Lilith's Brood opens with Dawn, in which Lilith Iyapo wakes aboard an alien Oankali ship centuries after a nuclear war has destroyed Earth, only to learn that her survival comes at a cost she never imagined. Adulthood Rites follows her son Akin, the first male human-Oankali construct, as he is caught between the humans who resist the aliens' genetic bargain and the Oankali who raised him. Imago completes the trilogy through Jodahs, a child whose metamorphosis defies both human and Oankali categories of gender and identity, forcing a reckoning with what humanity is willing to become in order to endure. Together these three novels form one of the most ambitious first-contact sagas in modern science fiction, interrogating consent, hybridity, and survival on a species-wide scale.
The collection then turns to Butler's Parable series, set in a fractured near-future United States. Parable of the Sower introduces fifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina, who survives the collapse of her gated community amid climate catastrophe and economic breakdown, and begins developing Earthseed, a new belief system built around the idea that "God is Change." Parable of the Talents continues Lauren's story years later as she works to protect her fledgling Earthseed community from a wave of authoritarian persecution following the election of a zealot president, testing the limits of faith, family, and resilience. Taken as a whole, this set reveals Butler's recurring preoccupations: power, biology, belief, and the cost of adaptation, rendered with a clarity and emotional force that has only grown more resonant over time.

About the Author
Octavia E. Butler (1947-2006) was an American science fiction writer widely regarded as one of the genre's most important and influential voices. She was the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, often called the "genius grant," and her novels won multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards over the course of her celebrated career. Butler's work is known for exploring race, gender, power, and biology through richly imagined speculative worlds, and both the Xenogenesis trilogy (Lilith's Brood) and the Earthseed series remain foundational, widely studied texts in modern American science fiction.
