Overview
Perfect Sound Whatever is James Acaster's Sunday Times bestselling memoir about the year he decided to only listen to music released in 2016. After a painful breakup and a rough patch in his comedy career, Acaster throws himself into a musical deep-dive, amassing 500 albums as a way of proving 2016 was secretly the greatest year for music ever. Funny, candid, and unexpectedly moving, it blends memoir, music criticism, and stand-up-style storytelling into something entirely its own. Fans of sharp British comedy and music-obsessed writing will find a lot to love here.

About the Book
Written by comedian James Acaster, Perfect Sound Whatever began as a personal experiment and grew into one of the most distinctive memoirs of recent years. In January 2017, Acaster wakes up heartbroken in New York, his relationship over and his sense of direction shaken. Rather than sink into the wreckage, he sets himself an odd, obsessive task: listen only to music released in 2016, and build the definitive case that it was the best year for music of all time. What follows is a 336-page journey through 500 albums, from acclaimed critical darlings to gleefully obscure oddities, each one a doorway into a memory, a mood, or a moment from his own life. Acaster weaves in stories about touring, faith, guilt, heartbreak, and mental health, all delivered in the dry, self-deprecating voice fans of his stand-up will instantly recognize. The book resists easy categorization, moving fluidly between diary entry, album review, and confessional essay, and the effect is a reading experience that feels like flipping through a friend's meticulously curated mixtape. Published by Headline and confirmed as a Sunday Times Bestseller, Perfect Sound Whatever has earned a devoted following among readers who appreciate memoirs that are funny without ever losing their emotional honesty. It's a book about how art can hold us together when everything else falls apart, and about the strange comfort of turning obsession into meaning.
