About the Books
R.F. Kuang's Poppy War series reimagines the brutal history of twentieth-century China through shamanic magic, vengeful gods, and merciless war. The story opens with Rin, an orphan from a poor southern province, who tests her way into Sinegard, the empire's elite military academy, only to discover that her talent for controlling fire is tied to the terrifying, addictive power of the gods. As war erupts between the Nikara Empire and the Federation of Mugen, Rin is thrust from the classroom into the front lines, forced to decide how far she will go for victory. The Dragon Republic continues her descent, following Rin in the aftermath of the atrocities she committed to end the war. Addicted to the drug that lets her summon her god, and increasingly untethered from the people she once fought to protect, she is drawn into a new conflict between rival factions vying to reshape the shattered empire. Kuang expands her world with new alliances, deeper mythology, and higher stakes, while never losing sight of the moral costs of power. Together, these two volumes chart a relentless arc from ambition to consequence, blending real historical atrocity with inventive, richly imagined magic. Fans of morally complex, unflinching epic fantasy will find a series that refuses easy answers. This collector's set preserves that arc in one cohesive, shelf-ready package.
