Overview
This 10-book Rebus collection gathers Ian Rankin's foundational Inspector Rebus novels, from Knots And Crosses through Dead Souls. Set against the smoky pubs, rain-slicked streets, and moral fault lines of Edinburgh, these early cases trace Detective John Rebus's evolution from a haunted ex-soldier into one of crime fiction's most enduring investigators. Rankin's tight, atmospheric prose balances procedural detail with sharp social commentary, and each novel stands on its own while building toward the richer, longer-running saga that followed. This paperback set is a natural starting point for new readers and a satisfying reread for longtime fans of the series.

About the Books
Ian Rankin introduced Detective Sergeant John Rebus in 1987's Knots And Crosses, launching a series that would go on to define modern Scottish crime writing. These ten early novels follow Rebus through his formative years on the Edinburgh police force, tackling abductions, ritualistic murders, political corruption, and the city's underworld figures, including the recurring antagonist Morris Gerald "Big Ger" Cafferty. Rankin uses Edinburgh itself as a kind of character, contrasting the city's genteel tourist face with the darker corners its residents know all too well. Themes of loyalty, guilt, institutional failure, and personal sacrifice run throughout, as Rebus's dogged instincts repeatedly put him at odds with superiors and colleagues alike. The eighth novel in this set, Black And Blue, marked a turning point for the series, becoming an international bestseller and earning Rankin the CWA Gold Dagger, and it remains one of the most recommended entry points for new readers. Across the collection, Rankin sharpens his signature blend of tight plotting and social realism, weaving in recurring figures who deepen the sense of a lived-in fictional Edinburgh. Readers who enjoy character-driven procedurals with a strong sense of place will find this set especially rewarding, as each book adds another layer to Rebus's world while remaining accessible to first-time readers. Together, these ten novels represent the backbone of one of the longest-running and most acclaimed detective series in British crime fiction.
