About the Books
The Poppy War trilogy follows Rin, a war orphan from Nikan's southern provinces, whose brilliance on the empire's entrance exam secures her a place at its most elite military academy. As she uncovers dormant shamanic powers and the empire descends into war, Rin must choose between survival, vengeance, and the cost of the power she wields. Across The Poppy War, The Dragon Republic, and The Burning God, Kuang draws on twentieth-century Chinese history to build a devastating fantasy epic. Babel shifts to an alternate 1830s Oxford, where translation and silver-working power the British Empire, and a young translator must decide whether to serve or resist it. Yellowface plunges into modern publishing: an aspiring author steals a manuscript from her late, more successful friend, and must grapple with appropriation, ambition, and internet fame. Together, these novels reveal an author unafraid to interrogate power and identity.
