Each novel is set in Ireland and explores intimacy, class, and the quiet complexities of modern relationships, making this a compact yet substantial introduction to a widely read literary voice, ideal for book clubs or a cozy weekend read.
About the Books
Sally Rooney's four novels share a recognizable sensibility even as each stands firmly on its own. Conversations with Friends, her 2017 debut, follows Frances and Bobbi, two young Dubliners whose close friendship is upended when they meet an older married couple, Melissa and Nick, drawing them into a tangled web of desire, ambition, and shifting loyalties, told in Rooney's spare, observant prose. Normal People, her 2018 breakout novel and winner of the Costa Novel of the Year, traces the on-again, off-again relationship between Connell and Marianne from secondary school in County Sligo through their university years in Dublin, examining how class, pride, and self-doubt shape a long, complicated love. Beautiful World, Where Are You, a Sunday Times and global number-one bestseller published in 2021, follows novelist Alice and her friend Eileen as they navigate new relationships and uncertainty, told partly through long, reflective emails exchanged between the two friends. Intermezzo, released in 2024 and also a global number-one bestseller, shifts focus to brothers Peter and Ivan Koubek, grieving their father's death while each pursues difficult, unconventional new relationships of his own. Across all four books, Rooney returns to themes of intimacy and connection, in clean, dialogue-driven prose widely admired for its emotional precision and unflinching look at modern life.
