Overview
The Sarah Rose Etter Collection brings together two acclaimed novels of surreal, body-forward literary fiction. The Book of X follows Cassie, born with her stomach twisted into a knot, from a family meat farm to a city desk job and into love, blending everyday detail with dreamlike imagery. Ripe, a National Bestseller, follows a woman navigating a cutthroat Silicon Valley startup while a small black hole shadows her every move. Together the two novels showcase Etter's fearless, image-rich voice, making this a defining set for literary fiction fans.
About the Books
The Book of X tells the story of Cassie, a girl born with her stomach twisted in the shape of a knot, as she moves from her family's rural meat farm to a desk job in the city and finally toward love. Ordinary moments—schoolyard crushes, unpaid bills, a parent's illness—are woven together with startling, dreamlike visions that blur the line between the real and the mythic. The novel won the 2019 Shirley Jackson Award and was named a Best Book of the Year by multiple outlets. Ripe, Etter's National Bestseller follow-up, trades the meat farm for the boardroom. A year into her dream job at a relentless Silicon Valley startup, Cassie is trapped in a corporate nightmare, shadowed by a small, persistent black hole that follows her everywhere. When an unplanned pregnancy collides with her CEO's demands crossing into illegal territory, Cassie must weigh whether ambition's rewards are worth their cost. Sharp, funny, and unsettling, Ripe was named a Best Book of the Year by Time, HuffPost, and Kirkus Reviews, and selected as a New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. Together, the novels trace intimate bodily experience into broader social critique.
