Overview
The Boy Who Grew Dragons is a much-loved chapter book series that follows Tomas, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary secret: a tiny pet dragon named Flicker, grown from a magical dragon-fruit tree in his grandad's garden. This six-book paperback collection gathers the entire story arc, from Flicker's very first hatching through to later adventures with friends, alongside a fun non-fiction companion guide. It's an ideal set for young fantasy fans who love funny, warm-hearted stories with a touch of magic, mischief, and genuine heart woven throughout every single chapter.
About the Books
Written by Andy Shepherd and illustrated throughout by Sara Ogilvie, the Boy Who Grew Dragons series began with Tomas discovering a strange fruit tree at the bottom of his grandad's garden, only to find it grows real, tiny dragons instead of ordinary fruit. His first hatchling, Flicker, becomes an unforgettable companion, and soon Tomas's friends Ted, Kat, and Kai each grow dragons of their own. Across the series, the friends navigate the joys and chaos of secretly raising dragons, from keeping Flicker hidden and safe, to traveling with him, to facing the bittersweet reality that dragons sometimes need to return to their wild, frosty homelands. Each installment builds on the warmth, humor, and gentle emotional depth that made the debut novel a standout, exploring themes of friendship, responsibility, and letting go. The sixth title in this set, The Ultimate Guide to Growing Dragons, is a lively non-fiction companion packed with dragon lore, growing tips, and behind-the-scenes details that fans of the series will love flipping through alongside the novels. Together, these six paperbacks offer newly independent readers a complete, funny, and heartfelt journey into a world where dragons are real, friendship is everything, and every dragonfruit hides a surprise. It's an excellent introduction to fantasy chapter books for children moving up from picture books, and a series many educators and parents recommend for building reading confidence and stamina.
