Overview
Meet Eva, Simone, and Ash: three best friends who run their own newspaper, The Newshound, and solve gentle dog-themed mysteries along the way. The Dog Squad brings together The Newshound, The Race, and The Show in one paperback set, following the trio and their whippet companion, Wafer, through a missing-owner mystery, a race-day scandal, and a community dog show fundraiser. Written and illustrated by Clara Vulliamy, these lively illustrated chapter books blend friendship, curiosity, and light detective work, making them an ideal next step for young readers moving on from early readers into their first proper chapter book series.
About the Books
The Dog Squad series follows Eva, an aspiring young journalist, and her best friends Simone and Ash as they run their own homemade newspaper, The Newshound, chasing stories and solving small-scale mysteries around their neighborhood. Their loyal whippet, Wafer, tags along on every adventure, offering comic relief and canine charm throughout the series. In The Newshound, the very first case, Eva discovers a stray dog outside her home and sets out to track down his real owner, only to realize the answer might mean losing a new friend. The Race turns the spotlight on a local whippet race, where Eva and her friends uncover some questionable behavior and learn what fair play really means. The Show closes out the set with a fundraising dog show organized to support a rescue center in need, testing the friends' teamwork under pressure. Clara Vulliamy pairs short, accessible chapters with warm, expressive pencil illustrations, giving newly confident readers visual support alongside the text. The books feature an inclusive, relatable cast, including non-binary representation among the friend group, reflecting real modern classrooms. Themes of honesty, teamwork, curiosity, and kindness to animals run through every installment, giving young readers a familiar world to return to book after book. Each story stands on its own, so the set works equally well read in order or picked up individually, and the recurring cast means fans who finish one title will already be eager to meet Eva, Simone, Ash, and Wafer again in the next.
